History of  the Huguenot Society
of Virginia

The Huguenot Society of Virginia was organized October 27, 1961, through the National Huguenot Society which met that day in Washington, D.C. at the Sheraton Park Hotel.  The State officers were installed by the National President General, Dr. O. Malcolm B. Gilman, after which the organizing president, Commander Charles T. MacDonald and 27 of the 30 founders and Charter Members were welcomed as the 28th State Society by the National Organizing Secretary General, Mrs. Alpheus P. Riddle.

Historically, the Virginia Society has met twice a year, on the last Saturday in March and the last Saturday in October.   Initially, the Spring Meeting was the Annual Meeting and was held in conjunction with a luncheon.  The Fall Meeting began with a Council Meeting for officers and Council members, followed by a banquet on Saturday evening shared by all the members and guests.  Traditionally on Sunday morning all the members attended church together.

The first anniversary was celebrated by a "Day of Remembrance" service at Manakin Episcopal Church in King William Parish, Powhatan County, on October 27, 1963, with the pastor Rev. W. C. Christian as host.  Huguenots originally founded the church in 1700 when several shiploads of the refugees arrived at Hampton.  Through the years the Virginia Society has enjoyed a large number of talented members serving as leaders of the society.

The October Day of Remembrance has changed to a Council Meeting followed by a Fellowship Hour, luncheon and a program, as followed by the March Annual Meeting.

In recent years, our meetings have been held in various areas of Virginia such as:
Richmond, Tappahannock, Newport News, Leesburg, Arlington, Charlottesville,
      Williamsburg, Culpeper
